Women’s Day has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific.

Tulips in the Netherlands!

March 21–May 10 in Lisse, Netherlands, less than an hour outside Amsterdam, Keukenhof Gardens shows off nearly 80 acres of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths—check the website for what’s in bloom and when. Hilltop trails above the plots offer views and photo ops of the splendor. Other attractions include an indoor pavilion with petal-themed art and more flowers plus tours of the grounds via bike or canal barge.

Having Fresh Flowers In Your Home Can Reduce Stress

Sending flowers to your sick or sad friend might be a universal go-to gift, but the heartwarming gesture is actually more helpful than you think. I know it may be surprising, but there's more to flowers than just a sweet smell and a pretty face—recent research suggests they can have some seriously positive effects on our health, too.

The American Society for Horticulture Science performed a study evaluating whether plants can have therapeutic influences on surgical patients, and the results are honestly kind of shocking. Ninety patients who had recently had appendectomies were split into rooms either with plants or without plants, and those in areas with some kind of foliage had a much more positive experience overall than those who didn't.

According to the study, those exposed to flowers had lower blood pressure and heart rate, lower ratings of pain, anxiety, and fatigue, and more positive feelings and higher satisfaction about their rooms than the patients without foliage. The findings from this research actually suggests that flowers could be "complementary medicine" for recovering patients.

New Ranunculus Varieties Available Mid March

With Spring right around the corner we are currently working our 2020 Spring Collection. We will be using a new varieties or Ranunculus.

Butterfly Ranunculus
Are you already familiar with Butterfly Ranunculus? These gorgeous flowers fit perfectly in bohemian and rustic looking floral designs! Ranunculus Butterfly was bred by the Japanese company. The variety has a long vase life and is characterized by the unique singular flower structure. Stems can carry up to 12 flowers each. The flower petals have a tiny layer of wax, giving them a sparkling appearance and helping to boost their longevity.

Ranunculus Romance
This variety also originates from the floral artists in Japan as well. Characteristic for Ranunculus Romance are the large flowers and strong, long stems. Just like the Butterfly Ranunculus, Romance has a very good vase life

Signs of Spring: Witch Hazel

Early blooming witch hazel

Witch hazel blooms very early in New England. Often mistaken for forsythia, witch hazel actually blooms first. Time to keep an eye out for these heralds of spring!

In addition to being one of our first bloomers, it is also a highly useful plant. Witch hazel extract is used as a natural remedy for everything from cleaning your face to cleaning you bathroom!

Uses for witch hazel:

-astringent cleanser for oily skin

-reduces swelling and irritation

-stops itches

-clean jewelry

-remove make-up

-reduce under eye puffiness

-add to shampoo to prevent hair from frizzing

-clean mirrors and eyeglasses

-bathroom cleaner, just add baking soda!

-prevent razor burn

-clean and soothe wounds

-soothe sunburns

-treat dandruff

There’s still more but this is already becoming a long list. Moral of the story? Spring is coming, look for witch hazel, the plant that cures whatever ails ya!

Signs of Spring: Helleborus

Hellebore flowers, one of the earliest spring bloomers.

I guess we can’t complain too much, it has been a fairly mild winter. Regardless, I am sure getting itchy for a little spring color!

Meet the hellebore! Also known as Lenten or Christmas rose, these beauties are one of the very first to come up in perennial gardens, and with a mild winter like this, their foliage can even remain evergreen. Leaves are a leathery dark green and the blossoms themselves are also quite tough. So even though they bloom early, the blooms tend to be pretty long lasting.

They come in a lovely range of colors, white, green and yellow, all hues of pink and red, bicolor, speckled and my personal favorite, black. What can I say? I’m a florist and I love black and brown flowers! For an avid gardener, collecting different species can become an addiction. The varieties vary in size, some healthy plants can form a very substantial shrub-like plant.

In writing this, I am realizing I have yet to check on my glorious black plant! And while the color isn’t exactly what one might call “springy”, seeing that plant start to bloom is a wonderful sign that winter is on it’s way out!
